Mines men finish third to qualify for NCAA Championships; Women finish eighth, Sydney Laws qualifies as an individual

WAYNE, Neb. –
The Colorado School of Mines cross country teams competed in the
2009 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships this morning
hosted by Wayne State College at Wayne Country Club. The CSM men
finished third out of 19 schools from the RMAC and Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) while the Oredigger women placed
eighth overall out of 22 total teams.
The Oredigger men’s third-place finish helped them to qualify
for the NCAA Division II National Championships as a team. This
will be the fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship for the
men’s squad. Aaron Swift and Ben Zywicki both earned
All-Region honors for the men. Swift finished 11th-overall
(31:55.3) out of 128 total runners. Zywicki finished right behind
Swift in 12th-place (32:07.1).

Sydney Laws recorded the highest ever individual finish at the NCAA
Regional Championships by a women’s cross country runner at
Mines to earn All-Region honors. Laws placed fourth overall out of
147 runners and qualified as an individual for the NCAA
Championships. Marie Patton finished in the top 20 as she place
16th with a time of 22:43.3.

The Oredigger men and Sydney Laws will compete in the 2009 NCAA
Division II National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 21st hosted by
Southern Indiana in Evansville, Ind.
