No. 16 Diggers Cruise Past Chadron State, 3-0
GOLDEN – Home standing and 16th-ranked Colorado School of Mines gave the crowd a show on "Parent's Night" with a 3-0 win over visiting Chadron State on Friday at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
The Orediggers (18-5, 12-2 RMAC) captured their 12th conference victory with the win, which leaves them one shy of tying the school record of 13 set in the 2009 season. The 2009 squad also set the school record with 22 victories during its campaign.
Mines controlled the match from start-to-finish behind game scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-16.
Led by a combined 24 kills from senior Jackie Stabell and junior Melanie Wannamaker, the squad posted a .298 attack percentage and a .65 sideout percentage in posting its 12th victory in its last 13 matches. The squad also notched 13 blocks in holding the Eagles (4-19, 2-12 RMAC) to a .086 attack percentage.
Wannamaker posted 14 kills on a .619 attack percentage while adding four digs and three of Mines' 13 blocks in the match.
Stabell added 10 kills on a .400 attack percentage with five digs and one service ace.
Sarah Pekarek added eight kills of her own with seven digs and two blocks on the defensive side, while junior Hannah Margheim led the defense with 12 digs.
Senior Alese Madenwald added seven digs to the Orediggers' defensive total and freshman Danielle Johnson-Hazlewood contributed 34 assists in the win.
The Orediggers will honor seniors Stabell, Madenwald, Grace Bol, Holly Hutchison, Anna Padget-Shields and Betsy Hansing before and after Saturday's match against Black Hills State. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
