DENVER – Led by another staunch defensive effort, the Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team repeated as RMAC Tournament Champions Sunday with a 1-0 shutout of tournament top-seed and host Regis at the Regis Soccer Pitch in Denver.
Anchored by freshman goalkeeper and RMAC Tournament MVP Jayln Yates, the Orediggers recorded their sixth straight victory against the Rangers (13-5-2), while collecting their 12th shutout of the season and seventh of the last 10 games.
Yates finished the tournament weekend with a combined six saves in 180:00 minutes of action and with her two blank sheets, she now stands alone in second in the school's career record book with eight shutouts. Yates' goals against average of 0.53 is also on pace to break the single-season mark 0.59 at Mines, set in 2011 by Penny Rogers (2008-11).
With nine wins in 10 games and a new program record 10-game unbeaten streak, the Orediggers (15-4-1) became the first team to win back-to-back conference championships since Fort Lewis in 2006 and 2007, and will make their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament when regional action gets underway next weekend.
Not only did the Orediggers' defense hold Regis to just six shots and three shots on goal, but for the second straight contest, the game-winning score came from the back third as junior Kelsey Neal headed home her first of the season to the left corner netting off a left wing cross from senior Megan Woodworth for the deciding tally just 3:40 into the match.
In Friday's 1-0 semifinal win against third-seed Metro State, senior defender Aubrey Bagley scored the game-winner and her first this year with a short strike to lower, right corner in the 64th minute.
Despite placing only two shots on frame, Mines finished with a 9-to-6 shots advantage and 5-to-3 margin on corner opportunities.
Joining Yates on the RMAC All-Tournament Team were defenders Neal and Bagley as well as senior midfield counterparts Woodworth and Dani Hering.
Next weekend's tournament field and regional pairings will be announced Monday at 5:30 p.m. (MST).
