Defense, Evans Lead Mines Past ASU, 5-0
GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team pushed its win streak to four matches with a 5-0 win over Adams State on Sunday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden.
Led by the second-career hat trick from junior Anna Evans, Mines (10-4-0, 7-3-0 RMAC) kept the offensive intensity strong throughout the match's entirety in posting 25 shots, including nine on goal.
Evans started off the scoring in the 15th minute when she took a pass from Becca Morales, fired it at the goal, and after the shot was initially saved by ASU (4-10-0, 2-8-0 RMAC) keeper Christie Stemple, the rebound bounced back to Evans and she buried it into the upper, right-90 to give Mines a 1-0 lead.
Senior Megan Woodworth, recently named the 2012 RMAC Academic Player of the Year, added her seventh goal of the season after she took a short cross from Rachael Turner and knocked it above Stemple's hands from seven yards out – pushing Mines' lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute.
Kat Murphy then notched her first goal of the season in the 34th minute when she headed a beautiful Deirdre Johnson pass in the lower, left corner to give Mines a 3-0 lead it would carry into the break.
Evans added her second of the day, and ninth of the season, in the 62nd minute when she controlled the ball for around 20 seconds, looked for an opening, and fired from the top of the box to the upper, left-90 to move the Oredigger lead to 4-0.
The Arvada native closed out the scoring with her third goal of the game at the 71 minute mark with another shot from the top of the box to the upper, left-90 to close out her second hat trick of the season.
Freshman keeper Jayln Yates improved to 10-4-0 with the win while not facing a shot on goal during the contest. Senior Amy Hegarty closed out the last 19 minutes of action in goal for the Orediggers.
The squad will head back out on the road next weekend and will open up action on Friday with a matchup at New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m.
