No. 5 Orediggers Fall To Yellowjackets In Opener, 1-0
BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 5 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team continued to have trouble with the Yellowjackets of MSU-Billings, falling to 0-3-1 all-time against the squad with a season-opening 1-0 loss on Friday afternoon at Yellowjacket Field in Billings, Mont.
Mines (0-1-0) and MSUB (1-0-0) kept the game competitive from start to finish, with the lone difference being an unassisted goal by Chelsea Shuman in the 33rd minute to the left of Oredigger keeper Jayln Yates, who was making her first career start.
MSUB held a 9-to-6 advantage in shots on goal and a 12-to-10 advantage on total shots in the matchup. Despite allowing the game winner, Yates made eight saves in her first collegiate regular season game.
Freshman Deirdre Johnson came off the bench to register a team-high two shots on goal and three shots in total, and junior Anna Evans added two shots of her own to account for half of Mines 10 total shots in the contest.
The Orediggers saw their unbeaten streak end at nine games, while the squad's shutout streak was also snapped at four games in the loss.
The squad will look to regroup when it takes on Northern State on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of the MSUB Cup in Billings, Mont.
