Four earn NSCAA All-Central Region honors

GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of
Mines’ Kayla Mitchell, Briana Schulze, Jessica Stark and
Megan Woodworth all earned NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches
Association of America) All-Central Region honors. Mitchell and
Schulze were both named to the First Team. Jessica Stark garnered
Second Team honors. Megan Woodworth earned recognition on the Third
Team.
Mitchell, a senior forward from Ontario, Ore. (Ontario H.S),
became the first women’s soccer player at Mines to earn
All-American honors. Mitchell was named Daktronics First
Team All-American. Mitchell was selected as the 2009
Daktronics Central Region Player of the Year and the RMAC
Player of the Year. A unanimous First Team All-RMAC pick, Mitchell
led the RMAC in goals (30), points (69) and game-winning goals (14)
and ranked fourth in assists (tied - 9). Mitchell currently ranks
seventh in Division II in goals per game (1.2) and points per game
(2.76). During the conference season, Mitchell was named RMAC
Offensive Player of the Week four times and was selected as the
RMAC Women’s Athlete for the Month of October. Mitchell had
five hat tricks this season, including a four-goal performance
against CSU-Pueblo, and established CSM single-game records for
points (8) and goals. For her efforts in the classroom, Mitchell
earned CoSIDA / ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic
All-American honors and was selected as the 2009 RMAC Women’s
Soccer Academic Player of the Year. Mitchell also earned CoSIDA /
ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-District and
First Team Academic All-RMAC honors.
Schulze, a junior goalkeeper from Centennial, Colo. (Eaglecrest
H.S.), helped Mines to 15 shutout victories, most in the RMAC,
starting all 25 games in net. A First Team All-RMAC selection,
Schulze finished the 2009 season ranked third in the RMAC in
shutouts (9), fourth in goals against average (0.88) and save
percentage (.804) and sixth in saves (86). In the Central Region
Championship against Metro State, Schulze made a career-high 11
saves and stopped three penalty kicks to help the CSM advance in a
shootout.
Stark, a junior defender from Abilene, Texas (Cooper H.S.), earned
Second Team All-RMAC honors this season. Stark and the Oredigger
defense rank first in the RMAC with 15 shutouts and third in goals
allowed (21) and goals against average (0.84). A
Daktronics Second Team All-Central Region pick, Stark
started all 25 games scoring seven goals and tallying one assist.
Stark also earned First Team Academic All-RMAC recognition and was
named CoSIDA / ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic
All-District.
Woodworth, a midfielder from Centennial, Colo. (Smoky Hill H.S.),
earned First Team All-RMAC honors as a true freshman. A
Daktroncis Second Team All-Central Region selection,
Woodworth finished the season ranked seventh in the RMAC in assists
(tied – 7), eighth in points (23) and 10th in goals (tied
– 8).
The Orediggers (19-5-1, 13-3 RMAC) finish the 2009 season ranked
seventh in the Division II. CSM advanced to the quarterfinals of
the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships, the
farthest any team at Mines has advanced in NCAA Tournament play.
