Mitchell named CoSIDA / ESPN the Magazine Second Team Academic All-American

GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines'
Kayla Mitchell has been named ESPN the Magazine Second Team
Academic All-American (College Division), as announced this
afternoon by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of
America).
Mitchell, a senior forward from Ontario, Ore. (Ontario H.S.), has
a 3.63 cumulative grade point average in civil engineering. This
season, Mitchell was selected as the 2009 Daktronics Central Region
Player of the Year and the RMAC Player of the Year. A unanimous
First Team All-RMAC pick, Mitchell leads the conference in goals
(30), points (69) and game-winning goals (14). Mitchell ranks sixth
in Division II in goals per game (1.30) and points per game (3.00).
During the conference season, Mitchell was named RMAC Offensive
Player of the Week four times and was selected as the RMAC
Women’s Athlete for the Month of October. Mitchell has five
hat tricks this season, including a four-goal performance against
CSU-Pueblo, and established CSM single-game records for points (8)
and goals. For her efforts in the classroom, Mitchell was selected
as the 2009 RMAC Women’s Soccer Academic Player of the Year,
was named First Team Academic All-RMAC and earned CoSIDA / ESPN the
Magazine First Team Academic All-District honors.
In 2008, Mitchell scored 22 goals (6 game-winners) ranking her
second in the RMAC. Mitchell established new CSM individual
single-season records for goals, points (47), shots (127) and shots
on goal (67) in route to being named First Team All-RMAC. A
Daktronics First Team All-Central Region and NSCAA/adidas Second
Team All-Central Region selection, Mitchell helped lead CSM to its
first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts in
the classroom, Mitchell was named the RMAC Women’s Soccer
Academic Player of the Year. Mitchell also earned First Team NSCAA/
adidas College Scholar All-West Region and Third Team NSCAA/adidas
College Scholar (College Division) All-American honors.
As a sophomore in 2007, Mitchell started all 21 matches and led
Mines in goals (13), total points (29) and game-winning goals
(seven). Mitchell tallied three assist and was 4-for-5 on penalty
kicks as she earned First Team All-RMAC and First Team Academic
All-RMAC honors.
During the 2006 season, Mitchell tallied 11 goals and three
assists. A Second Team All-RMAC selection, Mitchell led CSM in
total points (25) as a true freshman.
The third-seeded Orediggers (19-4) will play the #1 seed Metro
State in the Central Region championship match on Friday, Nov. 20th
at Auraria Field on the campus of Metro State at 11:00 am. The
winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the
Midwest Region championship match between Grand Valley State and
Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 1:00 pm at Auraria
Field.
