#21 CSM holds off Regis for a 2-1 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – The 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team held off Regis University for a 2-1 victory on Thursday afternoon, November 12th, at Dirks Field in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament. This is the Orediggers' second appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the program’s first-ever victory in NCAA post-season competition.
Kayla Mitchell found the net for her 28th goal of the season in
the 11th minute of the match. Mitchell tracked down a ball in the
far left corner of the box, controlled it and cut back in front of
the goal beating a defender and the Regis goalkeeper near post.
Mitchell scored again giving Mines a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute.
In almost identical fashion, Mitchell collected a loose ball in the
corner of the box and snuck it past the goalkeeper just inside the
near post for her 29th goal of the season.
The Rangers came back and cut their deficit to one goal in the
59th minute of the match. Katie Horn served a ball from near
midfield that CSM goalkeeper Briana Schulze was unable to control
out of the air. Chelsea Reichard was on the other end of the loose
ball and scored her eighth goal of the season.
Mitchell found herself one-on-one with the RU goalkeeper in the
70th minute but hit her shot high and over the top of the goal.
Regis attempted eight corner kicks in the match and nearly tied the
game when a scrambled ensued in front of the goal in the 73rd
minute. The two teams looked to be headed for overtime when
Reichard scored again but the goal was called off as Reichard was
offsides in the 90th minute.
Briana Schulze earned the win in goal for CSM making three saves.
The third-seeded Orediggers (18-4) will play #2 seed Fort Lewis College (18-2-3) in the second round of the NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament on Saturday, November 14th, at 1:00 pm at Dirks Field. Click here for the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship bracket.
