#3 Grand Valley State defeats #21 Mines, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament

DENVER, Colo. – The 21st-ranked Colorado
School of Mines women’s soccer team fell to #3 Grand Valley
State by a score of 3-0 in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA
Division II Women’s Soccer Championships on Sunday afternoon
at Auraria Field.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Irie Dennis in the 15th
minute of the match. Dennis found space on the left side of the box
and hit a shot high and far post for the goal.
Liz Oba’s shot missed left in the 29th minute for Mines
while Kayla Mitchell put a shot on goal in the 30th minute.
Grand Valley State took a 2-0 lead when Maria Brown connected with
Ashley Botts on a cross in front of the goal in the 40th
minute.
Mitchell shook free five minutes into the second half running down
a through ball that the GVSU goalkeeper was able to collect before
Mitchell could gain possession. In the 53rd minute, Mitchell
drilled a free kick from 30 yards out just over the cross bar. A
free kick by Megan Woodworth in the 55th minute found the head of
Jessica Stark who missed just right of the post.
First Team All-RMAC goalkeeper Briana Schulze made seven saves in
net for CSM finishing the season with a record of 19-5-1 in goal
with nine shutouts.
The 21st-ranked Orediggers in just their fifth season advanced
further in NCAA Tournament play than other team in the history of
Mines athletics while establishing a new program record for wins in
season (19-5-1). The 2009 squad established a total of 11 new team
records during the season.
