CSM shutouts CSU-Pueblo with a 4-0 victory; Mitchell nets her fifth hat trick of the season


GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team posted its 12th shutout victory of the 2009 season defeating CSU-Pueblo by a score of 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium. The Orediggers have shutout seven of their last eight opponents.

Kayla Mitchell gave Mines a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of the match when Liz Oba chipped a ball over the top of the CSU-Pueblo defense. Mitchell controlled the ball and beat the goalkeeper far post for her 12th game-winner of the season. The assist was Oba’s fourth of the season.

Mitchell struck again in the 14th minute increasing the CSM lead to 2-0. Megan Woodworth controlled the ball at the top of the box finding Allison Heeg open on her left near the edge of the box. Mitchell made an overlapping run and Heeg played the ball to Mitchell who placed the ball high and far post for the goal. The assist was Heeg’s first of the season.

In the 34th minute, Mitchell completed the hat trick receiving the ball in the box and turning inside to score once again beating the CSU-Pueblo goalkeeper far post. Becca Morales tallied the assist, her second of the season.

Woodworth and Mitchell connected again this time in the 70th minute. Woodworth found Mitchell wide open in the box with a short pass as Mitchell scored her fourth goal of the game and 26th of the season. The assist was Woodworth’s sixth of the season.

Mitchell’s four-goal performance established new CSM single-game records for both goals and points (8). The hat trick was Mitchell’s fifth of the season and the eighth of her career.

Briana Schulze earned her sixth shutout in goal as she made six saves.

The Orediggers (15-3, 11-3 RMAC) will travel to Las Vegas, N.M. on Sunday, Oct. 25th to take on N.M. Highlands at noon. Mines will wrap-up the regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 1st taking on Colorado Christian at noon.
