#21 CSM upsets #12 Fort Lewis, 2-1, in second round of NCAA Tournament; Orediggers to play for Central Region championship


DURANGO, Colo. – The 21st-ranked Colorado School of Mines women’s soccer team defeated #12 Fort Lewis College in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championships on Saturday afternoon, November 14th, at Dirks Field.

With the win, Mines (19-4-0 overall) has earned a berth in the Central Region championship match (t hird round of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships).  

CSM took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Kayla Mitchell, the 2009 RMAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year, took a corner kick and drove the ball near post.  At the near post was Allison Heeg, who was able to volley the ball past the FLC goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.  The assist was Mitchell’s ninth of the year.

The Skyhawks tied the match in the 20th minute when Elena Benavides found Hayley Hollenga inside the box on the right side.  Hollenga slotted the ball far post for the goal.

The match remained tied until the 40th minute when Mitchell scored her 30th goal of the season.

Fort Lewis attempted 10 corner kicks in the second half and tallied 11 shots, but the CSM defense and goalkeeper Briana Schulze held off the Skyhawks.  Schulze made a season-high nine saves in goal.

The match marked the third time these two teams had met this season.  In both of the previous two meetings, the Skyhawks rallied from 1-0 deficits to come away victorious.  Fort Lewis won 2-1 on September 20th (in Durango) and 3-2 on November 6th (RMAC Tournament Semifinals at Metro State in Denver).

The third-seeded Orediggers will play the #1 seed Metro State in the Central Region championship match on Friday, Nov. 20th at Auraria Field on the campus of Metro State at 11:00 am. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face the winner of the Midwest Region championship match between Grand Valley State and Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Nov. 22nd at 1:00 pm at Auraria Field.
