Gurule Highlights Wrestling Action At Bob Smith Open
HAYS, Kan. – A fourth-place finish by Luis Gurule at 125 pounds highlighted action for the Colorado School of Mines wrestling team on Saturday at the Bob Smith Open in Hays, Kan.
Gurule, a freshman from Englewood, posted a 5-2 record on Saturday. He opened with an 11-1 major decision victory over Joseph Blaylock of Central Oklahoma, before moving to the quarterfinal round with a 6-4 decision over Alfred Navarrete of Labette C.C. in his second match.
In the quarterfinal round, Gurule fell to Garrett Jones of Fort Hays State by a 9-6 decision to move into the consolation bracket before posting three-consecutive wins to move into the third-place bout.
Wins over Chadron State's Jace Johnson, Midland's Skyler Goepfert and teammate Elias Arias moved Gurule to the third-place match where he fell to No. 6 Gerald Huff of Adams State by a 6-4 score to finish fourth.
Austin Cordova, a senior from Dallas, Texas, posted a 5-2 record as well at 157 pounds, but did not record a place finish. After opening the tournament with a 3-1 decision loss to Daniel Kelly of Adams State, Cordova rattled off five-straight wins to advance to the seventh-round of the consolation bracket where he was knocked out by Kelly again by a 4-2 decision.
Colby Watters, John Crowley and Alec Bird posted 4-2 records at 133, 157 and 197, respectively, while Josh Brown posted a 3-2 mark at 165. Senior Ryan Swanson finished 3-2 at 184 and David Turnbull and Cory Wittwer finished 3-2 in 149-pound bracket.
Mines will return to action by hosting its first dual of the season on Thursday, December 6, at 7 p.m.
