Wrestling Opens Season At Cowboy Open
LARAMIE, Wyo. – Freshmen Robby Schultheis and Paul Wilson led the Colorado School of Mines wrestling team during its season-opening tournament on Saturday at the Cowboy Open with a pair of fourth-place finishes.
Schultheis and Wilson posted the top finishes for the team after ending the 133 and 197-pound Amateur tournaments in fourth. Schultheis opened with a 7-5 overtime win over Caleb Walker of Western Wyoming in his opening bout, then captured a first-round pinfall victory over Josh Hillhouse in the second round.
Schultheis then posted a 10-2 major decision over Eric Bergerson of Great Falls to earn a berth in the quarterfinals, and the opportunity to advance to the championship match. He lost to eventual runner up, Josh Shank, and moved to the consolation bracket. Another first-round pin, this time over Chris Williams, advanced Schultheis to the third place bout where he lost to Josh Haney, which left him in fourth.
Wilson suffered a pinfall loss in his first bout, but then recorded five-straight victories – all by way of pinfall or major decision – to also book a third-place bout. Wilson lost that matchup to David Reck via a 7-5 decision to finish in fourth.
John Crowley (Amateur 157) and Justin Frazer (Amateur 165) finished with matching 5-2 records, including a streak where each won four-straight bouts.
Luis Gurule posted a 4-2 record in the 125-pound Amateur bracket while Colby Watters posted the same at Amateur 133.
David Turnbull went 3-2 in the Amateur 149-pound tournament, while Tanner Taylor (Amateur 141), and Ryan Swanson (Elite 184) all finished at 2-2.
The squad will next be in action on Saturday, November 10, at the Colorado Mesa Open in Grand Junction.
