Wayne State (Neb.) defeats CSM, 72-48, on day one of the Super 8 Tip-off Classic

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Colorado School of
Mines women’s basketball team opened the 2009-10 season at
the Super 8 Tip-off Classic (hosted by Northern State Univ.)
falling to Wayne State College (Neb.) by a score of 72-48 on Sunday
evening at Wachs Arena.
Emily Dalton drained a jumper to start the game for the Orediggers
13 seconds in but the Wildcats scored 11 unanswered points in the
three plus minutes that followed to take an early nine-point
lead.
CSM cut the lead down to five with back-to-back baskets from
Savannah Afoa and Katie Carty but Wayne State continued to shoot
well from the field increasing its lead. WSC knocked down nine
first half three pointers (9-of-12, 75.0 %) and shot 55.6 % from
the field and as a result had a double-digit lead at halftime.
Mines outscored the Wildcats in the second half, 28-26 as Wayne
State shot just 27.3 % from the field. The Orediggers, who shot
32.1 % in the first half, shot 42.9 % in the second half of
play.
Three players finished the game in double-figures for Mines.
Savannah Afoa had a double-double with 12 points (6-of-13 FG) and
14 rebounds (10 offensive rebounds). Brecca Gaffney was one rebound
shy of a double-double (12 points, nine rebounds) and made six of
her eight free throws. Dalton chipped in with 11 points and four
rebounds.
The Orediggers (0-1 overall) will take on Northern State on the
second and final day of the Super 8 Tip-off Classic tomorrow, Nov.
16th at 5:00 pm.
