CSM downs Hawaii Pacific, 62-52

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of
Mines women’s basketball team defeated Hawai‘i Pacific
on Saturday afternoon at Lockridge Arena by a score of 62-52.
CSM started the game on an 8-2 run but the Sea Warriors answered
to keep the game close early cutting Mines lead to two points on a
basket by Jazzmin Awa-Williams with 13:19 remaining in the first
half. HPU scored just nine more points in the first half as CSM
held the Sea Warriors to 17.2 % shooting from the field resulting
in a 10-point halftime lead.
The Sea Warriors were able to cut Mines’ lead to four points
at the 7:42 mark of the second half but CSM answered with a 7-0 run
to push its lead back to 11 points after a layup by Emily Dalton.
HPU cut its deficit to nine points with 5:46 remaining after a pair
of free throws but Savannah Afoa scored giving Mines a double-digit
lead which it held onto for the remainder of the game.
Mines shot 33 free throws, 26 of which came in the second half,
shooting 81.8 % (27-for-33) from the line for the game. The Sea
Warriors shot 21 free throws in the game and were perfect from the
charity stripe in the second half (14-for-14).
Dalton led all scorers with a season-high 17 points (7-for-8 FT)
to go along with seven rebounds. Kait Soehner finished with 10
points including a pair of three pointers (4-for-4 FT), five
rebounds and three assists. Brecca Gaffney finished with nine
points, nine boards and two blocks. Afoa (four blocks) and Allie
Grazulis (5-for-6 FT) added seven points each while Katie Clements
chipped in with six points.
The Orediggers (2-1 overall) will host the Mines Thanksgiving
Classic beginning on Friday, Nov. 27th as they take on Fort Hays
State at 6:00 pm. Mines will host CSU-Dominguez Hills on Saturday,
Nov. 28th at 4:00 pm.
