Benson and McLain tabbed Pre-Season All-RMAC; CSM men picked to finish third, women to finish fifth


GOLDEN, Colo. – Colorado School of Mines’ Kiera Benson and Mack McLain were both named unanimous Pre-Season All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) selections as announced this afternoon.

Benson, a junior from Needville, Texas (Needville H.S.), competed at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships in the 60 m dash as a sophomore. During the 2009 indoor season, Benson established school records in the 200 m (25.46) and the 55m dash (7.14). At the 2009 RMAC Indoor Championships, Benson earned First Team All-RMAC honors in the 55 m dash, Second Team recognition in the 200 m and Third Team honors in the triple jump.

McLain, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla. (Bishop McGuinness H.S.), anchored the distance medley relay team that won the National Championship at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships as a redshirt freshman. At the NCAA Championships, McLain also finished eighth in the mile to earn All-American honors. McLain was named the 2009 RMAC Men's Freshman of the Year in indoor track & field. At the 2009 RMAC Indoor Championships, McLain broke the RMAC record (4:10.80) and earned First Team All-RMAC honors in the mile. McLain also earned Second Team All-RMAC accolades as a member of the distance medley relay.

The Oredigger men, who were picked to finish third in the RMAC Pre-Season Poll, finished third at the 2009 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships and finished ninth at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships. The CSM women, who finished fifth at the RMAC Indoor Championships last season, were tabbed fifth in the Pre-Season Poll.

The Orediggers will begin the indoor track & field season on Saturday, Dec. 5th when they host the CSM Alumni Extravaganza at Steinhauer Fieldhouse in Golden, Colo.
