CSM track & field squads earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors


GOLDEN, Colo. - The Colorado School of Mines men's and women's track & field programs earned 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Track & Field Team honors.

The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Teams of the Year award is based on a combination of academic and athletic achievements, with the top honor going to the team that had the combination of best overall finish at the respective Division II Indoor or Outdoor National Championships and cumulative GPA. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.

The CSM women's track & field team carried a cumulative 3.116 grade-point average. A total of seven student-athletes earned Academic All-RMAC honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2009. During the indoor season, the women's squad placed 38th at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships as Melanie Peddle earned All-American honors in the mile run. Savannah Afoa and Peddle both competed at the National Championships during the 2009 outdoor season. Afoa earned All-American honors in the discus.  

The CSM men's track & field team carried a cumulative 3.147 grade-point average. A total of 18 student-athletes earned Academic All-RMAC honors during the 2009 track & field seasons. The distance medley relay team of Nick Maynard, Mark Husted, Ben Zywicki and Mack McLain won CSM's third National Championship at the 2009 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships. The men placed 9th overall, the best finish for a CSM team (men or women) at the indoor championships. At the outdoor championships, Maynard (800 m) and McLain (1500 m) both earned All-American honors.

A total of 25 student-athletes earned Academic All-RMAC honors during the 2009 track & field season.
