Mavericks Take 9-1, Six-Inning Win In Saturday’s Opener

GRAND JUNCTION – RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Jessica Severinsen surrendered only three hits and Colorado Mesa handed Colorado School of Mines softball a 9-1 defeat in six innings in the series opener Saturday at Bergman Field.

The Mavericks (5-8, 4-3 RMAC) had three innings of two or more runs, including back-to-back three-run frames to open the afternoon.

Mines (7-7, 3-2 RMAC) strung together all three base knocks in the top of the fifth. Senior Morgan Anderson continued her hitting streak to eight straight with a one-out infield single, senior Sami Springer shot an opposite field single down the rightfield line and junior Cassie Ford reached on an RBI single to second.

Anderson, Springer and Ford each finished 1-for-3.

Sophomore starter Kristen Prudhomme fell to 6-6, giving up seven earned runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
