GOLDEN – Senior outfield mates Macy Jones and Kamee Vessey combined for three RBI and classmate Kelly Unkrich pitched seven innings of five-hit ball as the NFCA No. 13 Colorado School of Mines softball team defeated Colorado Mesa 5-2 Friday morning in its return to the CSM Softball Field in Golden.
In addition to a leadoff double in the first inning, Jones upped the Oredigger (21-3-1, 12-1 RMAC) lead to 4-0 in the second with her third home run this season, a high-arcing two-run shot over the left field fence in the second that plated freshman Elise Dugwyler who reached on an error by the second baseman.
Following a two-run homer in the fourth by CMU (12-8-1, 10-4-1 RMAC), Vessey gave Mines its ending three-run cushion in the bottom of the frame with a two-out double to right that also scored Dugwyler after she opened with an infield single.
Jones and Vessey totaled four of the Orediggers' six base hits, each going 2-for-3, while Jones and Dugwyler both scored a game-high two runs.
Ranked No. 6 in Division II in ERA, No. 7 in wins and No. 35 in strikeouts per seven innings entering play today, Unkrich kept her perfect record intact in the circle, improving to 14-0 with only the two runs and five hits allowed to go along with seven strikeouts.
