LAKEWOOD – The NFCA 12th-ranked Colorado School of Mines softball team scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat Colorado Christian 5-2 Saturday in conference action at Lakewood Park.
After CCU (3-8, 0-1 RMAC) forced extras with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, junior Sami Springer doubled home Macy Jones and Elise Dugwyler and senior Molly Thiebaut scored classmate Kamee Vessey on a fielder's choice to shortstop as the Orediggers clinched its fifth win in its final at-bat this season.
Springer finished 2-for-4 with the two RBI, her fifth multi-hit game and second in three games.
Vessey and junior Melissa Marshall provided Mines (14-2-1, 5-0 RMAC) the 2-0 lead with respective solo home runs in the fourth and fifth frames, their fifth and first long balls of the year and third multi-homer game by the Orediggers.
Jones and Dugwyler notched the other two of Mines' six total base hits, jumpstarting the three-run eighth with a pair of one-out infield singles.
Despite giving up her first runs in 43.1 innings, reigning two-time RMAC Pitcher of the Week Kelly Unkrich improved to 9-0, going the distance for the 10th consecutive game with the two earned runs allowed on five hits and three walks, while striking out five.
The senior ace continues to rank as the RMAC leader in wins, ERA (0.77) and strikeouts (76).
