Mines Tames Cougars With Timely Triples And Solid Pitching

LAKEWOOD – A three-run triple in the first inning by sophomore Cassie Ford and another dominant performance in the circle by senior Kelly Unkrich sent the NFCA No. 12 Colorado School of Mines softball team to a 4-0 game one win over Colorado Christian Sunday at Lakewood Park.

After walks to senior outfielders Macy Jones and Kamee Vessey and a one-out opposite field single down the right side by junior Sami Springer, Ford sent the eighth pitch of her at-bat to centerfield, clearing the bases with her first career triple for the 3-0 lead.

It was déjà vu for the Orediggers in the fifth frame as Vessey reached with her second of three free passes and came around to score on another three-bagger, this time a two-out shot to right field off the bat of Springer.

The four runs were more than enough support for Unkrich who dealt her seventh shutout, striking out nine, while yielding four hits and two walks in the full 7.0 innings to remain unbeaten on the season at 10-0.

Already the Mines (16-2-1, 7-0 RMAC) record-holder, Unrkich's 18th career blank sheet tied her program mark for most shutouts in a season, set in 2011.

Springer, Ford and Vessey accounted for all four of the Orediggers' hits as Springer finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run; Ford went 1-for-2 with the three RBI and Vessey was 1-for-1 with a team season-high three walks and two runs scored.
