Mines Blanks Metro State 12-0 To Complete Opening Day Sweep

DENVER – Following a nine-run, 16-hit outburst in this afternoon's 9-6 victory over Regis, the Colorado School of Mines softball team erupted for 12 runs on 11 hits Friday evening, blanking host Metro State 12-0 in six innings in the RMAC Preseason at Auraria Field.

For the second time today, nine Orediggers recorded a hit with four players driving in two runs or more.

Senior Preseason All-RMAC choice Kamee Vessey accounted for four runs, plating three with a second inning, two-out double and scoring one of Mines' seven runs in the sixth inning.

Juniors Courtney Derus and Gianna Duncan and senior Macy Jones combined for six RBI, including five in the sixth frame. Derus scored Jones and freshman Elise Dugwyler with a double to center for her second multi-hit performance of the day as she finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Jones and Duncan each knocked run-scoring singles with Jones scoring sophomore designated played Cassie Ford who went 2-for-3 and Duncan driving in Vessey and Derus with a base hit to center. Jones also drew a bases loaded, RBI walk in the second.

Sophomore Paige Coufal and junior Morgan Anderson also recorded RBI as Coufal pushed senior Molly Thiebaut across with a two-out, fifth inning double after Thiebaut reached on a triple to center and Anderson plated Duncan with a sixth inning infield groundout.

Kelly Unkrich (1-0), the two-time RMAC Pitcher of the Year and the 2013 Preseason Pitcher of the Year, nailed down the win in the circle, spacing seven hits and two walks on 97 pitches over the six innings.

The complete game blank sheet gave Unkrich sole possession of the Mines career shutout record with 12, while her five strikeouts are three away from surpassing the program's all-time strikeouts mark of 425, held by Carrie Wittkopf (1999-02).

The Orediggers conclude the RMAC Preseason tomorrow against Adams State (0-1) at 1 p.m. at Regis and UC-Colorado Springs (1-0) at 3:30 p.m. at Metro State.
