Big first inning in game two leads Mines to a win over #12 Nebraska-Omaha

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of
Mines softball team played a doubleheader against 12th-ranked
Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday afternoon at the CSM Softball Field and
came away with a win. UNO won the first game by a score of 10-5 and
CSM used a seven-run first inning to secure a 7-5 victory in game
two.
Macy Jones, Alyson Beck, Jessica Hamlin and Lauren Aberle all
drove in runs for CSM in game one. Aberle was 2-for-2 and Jones was
2-for-3 with a walk. Libby Balogh dropped to 1-1 on the season as
she pitched 5.2 innings and struck out six batters.
Melissa Negrete earned the win for UNO improving to 1-2 on the
season while Kristin Wellwood was 4-for-4 with three RBI and
Lindsey Slocum drove in three runs and scored twice.
A pair of UNO errors and seven Oredigger hits led to a seven-run
first inning in game two. Kaleigh Starr drove in two runs with a
double while Hamlin and Aberle both hit doubles that resulted in
runs for CSM.
Kelly Unkrich won her first collegiate game as she pitched a
complete game (11 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO). Starr was 2-for-3 with
a run scored, two RBI and a walk. Sarah Lustgraaf scored and drew a
pair of walks.
Lindsey Slocum pitched 5.1 innings in relief as she allowed no
runs and just two hits while striking out six batters and was
2-for-4 with two runs scored. Wellwood was 3-for-4 in game two with
a pair of RBI and a run scored.
The Orediggers (2-2 overall) doubleheader against Fort Hays State
that was scheduled to be played tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 7th
beginning at 11:00 am has been cancelled due to possible inclement
weather. CSM will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. next weekend to play in
the Desert Stinger Tournament. Mines will play on Friday, Feb. 12th
against St. Mary’s (TX) at 1:00 pm and Hawai’i Hilo at
3:00 pm.
