CSM softball splits a pair with Emporia State

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of
Mines softball team split a pair of games with Emporia State on
Friday afternoon at the CSM Softball Field. Mines won game one by a
score of 7-5 while Emporia State won the second game, 9-2.
In game one, the Orediggers got on the board in their first at bat
as Kaleigh Starr hit a home run to left field. CSM added two more
runs in the second as Starr and Macy Jones both drove in runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Starr hit her second home run of the
game, a three-run shot, and an error by the Hornets resulted in a
fourth run increasing Mines’ lead to 7-2. Emporia State
scored three runs in the seventh including a pair of home runs with
no outs. Liz Kramer entered the game in relief and recorded the
final three outs to earn the save.
Jennifer Heerey took the loss for ESU while Linda Ketter was
2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, two runs scored and three RBI.
Kaitlin Martin also homered in the game.
Libby Balogh earned the win for Mines as she pitched six innings
and struck out four batters. Starr was 3-for-4 with three runs
scored, four RBI and two home runs. Jones was 2-for-4 with a run
scored and an RBI. Sarah Van Lingen, Molly Thiebaut and Dani Nagler
each had a double and a pair of hits.
Paige Ladenburger led the way for Emporia State (1-1) in game two
as she pitched a complete game allowing just two runs on two hits
and striking out 11 batters.
Kelly Unkrich pitched five innings and struck out five in her
first collegiate appearance. Van Lingen went 1-for-3 with a two-run
home run.
The Orediggers (1-1 overall) will host #12 Nebraska-Omaha tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Feb. 6th at the CSM Softball Field. Game one will begin at 12:00 pm. Mines will play a doubleheader against Fort Hays State on Sunday, Feb. 7th, first game is scheduled for 11:00 am.
