GOLDEN – Freshman Joe Haines provided the Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team the early lead and the defense remained steadfast late as the Orediggers hung a 1-0 decision on visiting Metro State Friday evening at the CSM Soccer Stadium.
In the 18th minute of the first half, senior Alex Nass directed a free kick to the front of the net where the rebound was collected by sophomore Tanner McManus and dropped back to Haines. Haines then beat the diving keeper with a low stinger through traffic for his first collegiate score and the eventual game-winner.
After an even opening frame in terms of possession and overall shots, pace began to hasten in the second as the Roadrunners outshot Mines 10-to-6, including four shots on target. A 5-to-1 margin on corners in the stanza also left MSUD with a handful of possible scoring sequences, yet the Oredigger defense, led by senior reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week Manville Strand, held firm as Mines snapped a two-game skid to the Roadrunners.
Unbeaten in their last four, the Orediggers moved to 4-1-2 overall and 1-0-2 in the RMAC with the shutout, while Metro State fell to 4-3-0 and 1-2-0, respectively.
The men close out the weekend at home on Sunday as nearby Colorado Christian (1-6-0, 0-3-0 RMAC) visits for a noon conference matchup.
