No. 11 Diggers Down Dustdevils, 4-1
GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer squad erupted for four goals, while the defense held strong in a 4-1 win over Texas A&M International on Sunday afternoon at the CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden.
Mines (3-1-0) held the Dustdevils (1-2-0) to just four shots on goal in the matchup, with the lone goal by the visitors coming on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
Mines got on the board first in the 20th minute when Baski Baker notched his second goal of the season to the short side of the goal after accepting a pass from Tesho Akindele.
Akindele then added his fifth of the season in the 32nd minute when Joe Haines lofted a pass into the space in front of Akindele as he was making a run up the field, and Akindele did the rest by blasting the eventual game winner inside the left post to put Mines up 2-0.
TAMIU got on the board just over a minute later when Jovany Macias scored on a penalty kick, trimming the Oredigger lead to 2-1.
Tanner McManus then added his second goal of the season on a beautiful header into the bottom right corner of the goal on a short cross from Alex Nass.
Akindele then broke loose and looked to have a chance at goal No. 2 on the day, but a penalty by the TAMIU keepers set up a penalty shot for the junior. The penalty only delayed the inevitable as Akindele was true on his penalty shot, which brought the score to its final at 4-1 in the 54th minute.
Senior keeper Manville Strand posted three saves while facing a total of 11 shots, including four on goal, to move to 3-1 on the season.
The Orediggers will head out for their first road test of the season when they open up the RMAC slate at CSU-Pueblo on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
