Akindele's Game Winner Gives Men's Soccer A 3-2 Win In Opener

GOLDEN – A game winner by junior Tesho Akindele in the 87th minute lifted the Colorado School of Mines men's soccer squad to a season-opening 3-2 victory at the CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden on Friday evening.

Mines (1-0-0) jumped out a 2-0 lead at halftime behind an unassisted goal by Zach Page-Belknap in the 14th minute and a one by Tanner McManus from Alex Nass in the 36th minute.

The Orediggers would see their 2-0 lead go away as the second half wore on, with Anderson McDaniel notching an unassisted goal in the 51st minute and James Martin notching the equalizer in the 83rd.

Akindele, the Preseason RMAC Player of the Year, notched his first goal and game winner of the season less than four minutes later to put Mines up for good with less than four minutes remaining on the clock.

Mines pounded the SEU (0-1) goal all night to the tune of eight shots on goal and 15 shots total, with Akindele, Nass and Helster leading the way with two SOG's a piece.

The Orediggers will face No. 10 Incarnate Word on Sunday in their next matchup with the first kick slated for a 1:30 p.m. start. 

No. 1 Fort Lewis will battle St. Edwards before the Diggers and Cardinals square off on Sunday. The FLC/SEU matchup will begin at 11 a.m.
