#21 Metro State advances past #11 CSM on penalty kicks, 5-4 in semifinals of the RMAC Tournament


DURANGO, Colo. – The 11th-ranked Colorado School of Mines men’s soccer team and #21 Metro State tied at 1-1 headed into overtime and after two periods on Friday afternoon at Dirks Field the match went to penalty kicks. The Roadrunners prevailed winning the shootout, 5-4, to advance to the RMAC Championship.

This was not the first time that these two teams faced off in a shootout. In the 2005 RMAC Tournament these two teams met in Durango, and Mines advanced winning the shootout, 3-2.

Metro State took an early lead on a goal by Scott Grode in the 5th minute of the match courtesy of a Sam Rolph assist.

Mines tied the match 31 minutes and nine seconds later on a free kick. Cale Haas scored his seventh goal of the season while Chike Sullivan tallied his fourth assist of the year.

The Roadrunners held a 9-2 advantage in shots in the first half but the match remained tied. The two teams combined for just five total shots in the second half sending the match to overtime. CSM and MSCD both tallied a pair of shots in the two overtime periods but neither team was able to score sending the match to a shootout.

In the shootout, Metro State goalkeeper Dominique Griffith stopped the final CSM penalty kick attempt and MSCD’s scored its final penalty kick to advance.

Manville Strand played all 110 minutes in goal and faced 14 shots making four saves.

The Orediggers (15-2-4, 11-2-1 RMAC) will await the announcement of the field for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championships which will be made on Monday, Nov. 9th at 5:00 pm (MST) on NCAA.com.
