Regis, No. 2 Metro State On Tap For Men's Basketball This Weekend
GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines men's basketball team will return to the friendly confines of Lockridge Arena this weekend when the squad hosts Regis and No. 2 Metro State on Friday and Saturday, respectively, in Golden.
Mines (7-4, 4-3 RMAC) enters the matchup following a pair of losses last weekend to Western State (94-63) and Colorado Mesa (75-56). This weekend's pair of losses marks the first time the squad has lost consecutive games since falling to Colorado Christian and Minnesota State on March 2 and March 13, 2010, in the RMAC Shootout Quarterfinals and the NCAA Division II Central Region Quarterfinals, respectively, which is a span of 72 games.
The squad currently sits sixth in the conference with an average of 76.0 points per game while giving up an average of 75.4 points per contest. Mines' 46.0 team shooting percentage is good for fourth in the conference and the team's plus-2.1 rebounding margin is fourth in the RMAC.
Junior Trevor Wages continues to lead the team in scoring and rebounding with averages of 17.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game – good for third and second in the RMAC, respectively. Wages has recorded six double-doubles already this season, including a string of five straight that was snapped in Saturday's loss to Colorado Mesa.
Fellow junior Luke Meisch sits second on the team and 10th in the RMAC with an average of 15.3 points per game while sitting tied for fifth in the league with an average of 8.0 rebounds per contest. Meisch has scored in double figures in all but one game this year, including a career-high 28 points in Mines' 71-69 win over Colorado Christian on December 15 in Lakewood.
Sophomore Brian Muller and freshman Ruben Jackson lead the team with averages of 2.5 and 2.1 assists per game, respectively, while Muller sits third on the squad with an average of 14.9 points per game.
Regis (3-7, 2-5 RMAC) enters Friday's tilt having lost seven of its last nine games, with the squad posting wins over UCCS (77-67) and Western New Mexico (63-62) during that span. Offensively, the team is led by Jarrett Green at an average of 13.7 points per contest, while Demitrius Owens follows with 10.7 points per game to account for both of the Rangers' players that average double figures for scoring. Owens leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game, while Joseph Bodman and Jon Conley follow with averages of 4.5 and 4.3 rebounds per game, respectively. Mines claimed both victories in the series last season by scores of 80-56 (Golden) and 75-66 (Denver).
No. 2 Metro State (11-0, 7-0 RMAC) currently sit atop the conference with a pair of unblemished records and leads the conference in scoring (87.3), scoring defense (61.9), scoring margin (+25.4), field goal percentage (.500), field goal percentage defense (.396), steals (10.4), turnover margin (+8.29), offensive rebounding (14.0) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2) in RMAC play. Mines took two of the three matchups between the two squads a season ago, including a 68-57 victory over the then-No. 1 Roadrunners in Golden on January 6. Later in the season, then-No. 5 Mines topped then-No. 12 Metro State by a 72-67 final on February 6 in Denver to clinch a regular-season series sweep, but the then-No. 13 Roadrunners claimed a 73-64 victory over then-No. 1 Mines in the Central Region Championship of the NCAA Tournament. Brandon Jefferson leads a quartet of players in double figures with 15.7 points per game, while Demetrius Miller (14.6), Jonathan Morse (14.5) and Mitch McCarron (14.5) follow on the stat sheet.
Friday's matchup with Regis is set for an 8 p.m. tip-off, while Saturday's contest with Metro State is slated to start at 7 p.m.
