Defense Leads No. 12 Orediggers Past Mavericks, 66-48
GOLDEN – Redshirt freshman Trevor Ritchie poured in a game and career-high 20 points to lead No. 12 Colorado Mines to a 66-48 victory over Colorado Mesa in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball action on Friday night at Lockridge Arena in Golden.
The Orediggers (14-2, 10-2 RMAC) used stout defense through the first 30 minutes of the ballgame to limit the Mavericks (8-8, 6-6 RMAC) to just 35 points with under seven minutes remaining in the second half. CSM held down the block in posting a 38-to-22 advantage on points in the paint and turned 19 CMU turnovers into 24 points.
The lead changed just twice during the contest, with CSM capturing its final lead, 4-3, with 17:31 to play in the first half on a layup by Ritchie. The Orediggers continued to lead throughout – pushing their lead to as many as 24 points with 8:05 remaining in the second half.
Richie recorded his 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor while adding two assists, one rebound and one steal in his first start.
Junior Brett Green added 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 2-of-3 from downtown and a perfect 4-of-4 from the foul line in 35 minutes on the court.
Dale Minschwaner, Trevor Wages and Luke Meisch all tied for the team lead with eight rebounds and Chris Goutama and Nico Mucci posted three assists each in the win.
The Orediggers will close out the first half of their four-game home stand tomorrow when they host the Mountaineers of Western State College. WSC (6-10, 4-8 RMAC) lost to Colorado Christian on Friday evening by a 75-69 final in Lakewood.
