Ritchie signs with CSM men's basketball program

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men’s basketball program has received a National Letter of Intent from Trevor Ritchie (Portland, Ore. / Wilson High School) to begin playing for the Orediggers in 2010-11, as announced today by CSM Head Coach Pryor Orser.

Ritchie, a 6’4”, 195-lb. combo guard, was selected as the Portland Interscholastic League (PIL) 6A Player of the Year following his senior season at Wilson High School.  Ritchie also garnered Second Team All-State recognition, was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and was named to the OSAA 6A North / South All-Star Team in 2009-10.  A two-time First Team All-League pick, Ritchie was named to the Portland Observer Joyce Washington All-Star Team on two occasions during his prep career.

Ritchie, who was named to the Gillette (Wyo.) Energy Classic All-Tournament Team and earned Honorable Mention All-State recognition during his junior campaign, helped lead WHS to a pair of Sweet 16 appearances and one Elite Eight finish in the 6A State Tournament during his three years as a varsity starter.  A two-year team captain, Ritchie averaged 5.2 rebounds per game and led his team in scoring (19.7 ppg), assists (4.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg) as a senior.  Ritchie shot 50% from the field – including 38% from three-point range – and 80% from the free throw line during his final season at Wilson High School.

“The men’s basketball program at Colorado School of Mines has just been upgraded with the signing of Trevor Ritchie,” said Orser, who was selected as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division Coach of the Year in 2009-10 after leading Mines to a 17-11 overall record (14-5 RMAC) and a share of the RMAC East Division title.  “Trevor is a player with great length at the position of combo guard, and has very good skills.  Trevor also has a great understanding of the game, is very competitive, and is a direct fit for our unique system here at CSM.  With our nucleus of players returning after going to the NCAA Tournament this past year, Trevor will give us redshirt flexibility while allowing the veteran players to matriculate through the system.  Our coaching staff has big plans for Trevor for the future and we think he can be an impact type of player.”

The Orediggers made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament and established a new single-season program record for conference victories in 2009-10.  CSM earned the #1 seed in the East Division for the RMAC Shootout and hosted a Quarterfinal game at Lockridge Arena.  Sophomore center Dale Minschwaner earned First Team All-RMAC, RMAC East Division Player of the Year and First Team All-East Division honors while freshman guard / forward Brett Green garnered RMAC East Division Freshman of the Year and Third Team All-RMAC accolades.  Junior guard Sean Armstrong earned Second Team All-East Division honors, as well.  Green’s selection as the RMAC East Division Freshman of the Year marked the sixth time that an Oredigger has earned such recognition during Orser's tenure.  2009-10 also marked a program-record sixth consecutive winning season for the Orediggers.
