No. 20 Golf Leads CMU Invitational

MONTROSE – The No. 20 Colorado School of Mines golf team picked up where it left off a season ago by ending the second round of the CMU Invitational (RMAC No. 1) in a tie for first out of 10 teams at The Bridges Golf Club in Montrose. 

The Orediggers ended the first 18 holes in third place after posting a team score of 294, but the squad rebounded to shave seven strokes of its score during the second round to end the first day in a tie with UCCS at 581 strokes. 

Preseason All-RMAC selection Michael Lee led the team with scores of 72 and 71 to finish the first day of action in a tie for second overall. He is currently tied with Brandon Bingaman of Colorado Mesa and the pair trails Grant Dean of UCCS by two strokes on the individual leaderboard. 

Junior Kyle Grassel follows just one stroke back in a tie for fourth overall after carding matching 72's on Monday, while sophomore Jordan Arndt sits three strokes back of Grassel in a tie for 10th overall. 

Chad Herges finished as Mines' fourth golfer after rounds of 75 and 73 left him in a tie for 13th overall - just one stroke behind Arndt.

Sophomore John Ahern closed out the Oredigger cards on Monday with rounds of 75 and 74 which takes him into Tuesday in a tie for 18th overall.

The tournament will conclude with Tuesday's final round.
