Mines football defeats Western State, 24-7

GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines defeated Western State College by the score of 24-7 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, October 10th, at Brooks Field. For the box score, CLICK HERE.
A 24-yard field goal by the Orediggers' Dalton Lane at 3:08 in the opening quarter proved to be the only score of the first half by either team.
Midway through the third period (8:33), Adam Saur caught a five-yard scoring pass from David Pesek to increase the CSM lead to 10-0. Pesek's second touchdown pass of the afternoon, a 15-yard toss to Keegan Moyer at 9:03 in the fourth quarter, extended Mines' advantage to 17 points.
Western State's Shaun Suttorp returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown at 4:36 in the fourth quarter to account for the Mountaineers' lone score of the contest. Pesek's four-yard touchdown pass to Saur with just 49 seconds left in the game closed out Saturday's scoring.
Saur concluded the game with seven catches for 81 yards and two scores while Pesek completed 18-of-37 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns (one interception). Marc Schiechl (five solo stops, two tackles for a loss), Alex Vigil and Kaleb Anderson (two quarterback hurries) all recorded six total tackles apiece as the Orediggers, who were listed in the "receiving votes" section of the most recent (October 5th) American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll. Schiechl, James Tucker (five total tackles) and Nick Haniszewski (five total tackles) each had one sack. With 27 career touchdown receptions (four in 2007, 13 in 2008, 10 in 2009), Saur is now just four away from tying the CSM individual career record of 31 (Jonny Chan, 2001-04). Earlier this week, Saur was selected as the RMAC Male Player of the Month for September of 2009.
Tyler Daniels completed 13-of-24 passes for 139 yards as the Mountaineers fell to 3-4 overall (3-2 RMAC). Western State's Trevor Bobb, who recorded four tackles for a loss, one sack and one interception, led all players with eight total tackles (seven solo).
Mines (5-2 overall, 5-0 RMAC) will play at Adams State College (3-4 overall, 3-2 RMAC) on Saturday afternoon, October 17th, at 12:00 p.m. (MST) at Rex Field in Alamosa, Colo. The Orediggers will return home to host Chadron State College on Saturday afternoon, October 24th, at 12:00 p.m. at Brooks Field.
