Washburn University defeats CSM, 27-14

GOLDEN, Colo. - Washburn University defeated Colorado School of Mines by the score of 27-14 in non-conference NCAA Division II football action on Saturday afternoon, August 29th, at Brooks Field. FOR THE BOX SCORE, CLICK HERE.
CSM opened the scoring at 4:20 in the first quarter when 2009 Pre-Season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year David Pesek threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Adam Saur. Washburn responded when Pierre Desir returned an interception 38 yards for a score with just 10 seconds elapsed in the second quarter, but Mines' Hunter Wardlaw blocked the extra-point try to preserve a one-point lead for Mines.
The Ichabods got a 19-yard scoring pass from Dane Simoneau to Joe Hastings with 5:21 remaining in the second quarter to carry a 13-7 advantage into halftime. Vershon Moore's five-yard touchdown scamper at 11:44 in the third quarter and Justin Cooper's 78-yard scoring run at 3:07 in the fourth period accounted for Washburn's final scoring of the contest. Mines' Jahre Cheeseman scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:21 remaining in the game.
Cooper concluded the afternoon with 136 yards on 13 carries (10.5 ypc) for the Ichabods, who outgained CSM 493 to 270 in total yards. Simoneau completed 17-of-26 passes for 236 yards while Hastings amassed 96 yards on four receptions. Michael Krajicek led WU with nine total tackles (five solo), including three behind the line of scrimmage and one sack. Washburn overcame 12 penalties for 123 yards while improving to 1-0 overall.
Cody Renken caught 13 passes for 72 yards for the Orediggers (0-1 overall), who had a 35:17 to 24:43 advantage in time of possession. Pesek completed 35-of-44 passes for 227 yards (one interception) while Cheeseman carried 17 times for 56 yards. Alex Vigil led CSM with nine total tackles (six solo) while Wardlaw, Nick Haniszewski and James Tucker each recorded eight total stops. Renken, whose 13 receptions were just one shy of tying the CSM single-game record of 14, also returned three punts for 37 yards and three kickoffs for 103 yards (long of 50).
CSM will play another non-conference NCAA Division II game at Fort Hays State University (1-0 overall) on Saturday, September 5th, at 6:00 p.m. (MST). The Orediggers will then begin the RMAC portion of their schedule at Western New Mexico University on Saturday, September 12th, at 12:00 p.m. (MST) at Ben Altamirano Memorial Stadium in Silver City, N.M.
Mines will then return home to host Fort Lewis College on Saturday, September 19th, at 12:05 p.m. (MST) at Brooks Field. The Orediggers' game against the Fort Lewis will be televised live as the RMAC Football Game of the Week. The game, which will be produced by KSPK-TV and carried by the Altitude Sports & Entertainment Network, will be available live on ALTITUDE 2, with a tape delay re-broadcast airing on ALTITIDE on Sunday afternoon, September 20th, at 1:00 p.m. (MST).
