Orediggers record 52-38 win at Western New Mexico


SILVER CITY, N.M. - Colorado School of Mines defeated Western New Mexico University by the score of 52-38 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) football action on Saturday afternoon, September 12th, at Ben Altamirano Memorial Stadium.  FOR THE BOX SCORE, CLICK HERE.

CSM opened the scoring at 8:11 in the first quarter when Cody Renken caught an eight-yard scoring pass from David Pesek.  Jahre Cheeseman found the endzone on a 16-yard touchdown run less than three minutes later (5:52) to give the Orediggers a 14-0 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, Renken's second touchdown reception of the game - a seven-yard connection from Clay Garcia at 11:26 - and Dalton Lane's 27-yard field goal at 6:35 increased CSM's advantage to 24-0.  The Mustangs answered with a safety (2:42) and a two-yard Jake Morales touchdown run (00:05) late in the second period.  Dennis Havrilla connected with Christopher Miranda on the subsequent two-point conversion attempt at the end of the first half as WNMU cut its halftime deficit to 14 points (24-10).

Mines and Western New Mexico got one-yard scoring runs from Cheeseman (13:26) and Havrilla (12:14) early in the third period.  The Orediggers and Mustangs traded scores again midway through the third quarter when Cheeseman hauled in a 46-yard scoring pass (9:20) and WNMU's Salvador Garcia caught a nine-yard touchdown pass (6:44).  CSM's Adam Saur had a pair of touchdown receptions - one for 50 yards (5:57) and the other from nine yards out (1:00) - later in the third quarter to give CSM a 52-23 lead.

WNMU's Scotty Crespin caught a 10-yard touchdown pass (12:37) and Havrilla scored on another one-yard plunge (3:01) in the final period to close out the scoring.

Saturday's game between the Orediggers and Mustangs, which lasted four hours and 46 minutes, was delayed one hour and 35 minutes with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter due to lightning near Ben Altamirano Memorial Stadium.

Cheeseman finished with 26 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while Pesek completed 18-of-26 passes for 252 yards and four touchdowns (one interception).  Saur (124 yards, two touchdowns) and Renken (59 yards, two touchdowns) each caught seven passes as the Orediggers improved to 1-2 overall (1-0 RMAC).  Alex Vigil (one sack) led all players with nine total tackles (six solo) while Marc Schiechl (one sack, 1.5 tackles for a loss), James Tucker (one forced fumble) and Hunter Wardlaw (interception) each concluded the contest with eight total stops.  Nick Haniszewski (six total tackles) finished with 1.5 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.  Schiechl, the 2009 RMAC Pre-Season Defensive Player of the Year who was tabbed as a Pre-Season All-American by four different publications, also came away with a pair of fumble recoveries.

Havrilla, who went 25-of-44 for 267 yards and three touchdowns (one interception) through the air, carried 19 times for 68 yards and two scores on the ground.  Crespin led all receivers with nine catches for 91 yards.  Derrick Perrault led the WNMU defense with eight total tackles (four solo).  Colin Lund averaged 48.6 yards on five punts (long of 58) for the Mustangs, who fell to 1-1 overall (0-1 RMAC).

Mines will return home to host Fort Lewis College (1-2 overall, 0-1 RMAC) on Saturday, September 19th, at 12:05 p.m. (MST) at Brooks Field.  The Orediggers' game against the Fort Lewis will be televised live as the RMAC Football Game of the Week.  The game, which will be produced by KSPK-TV and carried by the Altitude Sports & Entertainment Network, will be available live on ALTITUDE 2, with a tape delay re-broadcast airing on ALTITIDE on Sunday afternoon, September 20th, at 1:00 p.m. (MST).  Dan Karcher will handle the play-by-play, Wayne McGinn will provide the color commentary and Jon Eddy will be the sideline reporter for KSPK-TV.
