CSM football earns 23-17 win at Mesa State


GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines defeated Mesa State College by the score of 23-17 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) football action on Saturday night, October 3rd, at Stocker Stadium.  For the box score, CLICK HERE.

Dalton Lane's 39-yard field goal at 8:37 in the first period and Jahre Cheeseman's four-yard touchdown reception from David Pesek with just 24 seconds remaining in the second quarter gave Mines a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Logan Rowe's first collegiate touchdown, which came on a 41-yard pass from Pesek midway through the third quarter (9:27), increased Mines' lead to 17 points.

Mesa State (3-3 overall, 3-1 RMAC) got on the scoreboard for the first time at the 2:25 mark in the third period when Justin Murray caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Michael Mankoff.  The Mavericks' Michael Sweeney connected on a 31-yard field goal early in the final period (11:13) to bring Mesa State to within a touchdown of Mines at 17-10.

Pesek's third touchdown pass of the contest, a 32-yard connection to Dominic Bravo with 7:19 remaining in the game (kick failed) - increased Mines' advantage to 13 points.

Mankoff tossed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Murray with just 2:38 left in the final period to close out the scoring on Saturday night.

CSM's Alex Vigil led all players with 15 total tackles (five solo) while Hunter Wardlaw was credited with 12 total stops.  Cheeseman carried 21 times for 75 yards and Pesek completed 21-of-37 passes for 329 yards (three touchdowns, one interception).  Adam Saur caught seven passes for 90 yards, Rowe finished with four receptions and Bravo concluded the game with 102 yards receiving on three catches.  Kyle Goracke, who had three passes defended, made 10 total tackles (five solo) while reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week Marc Schiechl and Kaleb Anderson each had one sack.  Nick Haniszewski came away with his first interception of the year as the Orediggers (4-2 overall, 4-0 RMAC) won for just the second time in their past 12 outings against Mesa State.  Saur remains six touchdown receptions shy of tying the CSM career record of 31.

Mesa State's Will Halboth had 20 carries for 102 yards (5.1 yards per carry) while Murray finished with five receptions for 42 yards and two scores.  Mankoff 9-of-18 passing attempts for 80 yards and one touchdown (one interception).  Aaron Silverthorne (interception) and Derek Thorne led the MSC defense with nine total tackles apiece while Dom Applehans collected six total stops - including four tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks.

The Orediggers will return home to host Western State College (3-3 overall, 3-1 RMAC) in the annual Homecoming / Hall of Fame game on Saturday afternoon, October 10th, at 12:00 p.m. (MST) at Brooks Field in Golden.  CSM will induct four former student-athletes, as well as three outstanding supporters, into the 14th annual class of its Athletics Hall of Fame during a banquet on Friday evening, October 9th, at the Ben Parker Student Center on the CSM campus.  RMAC Commissioner J.R. Smith will be the guest speaker at the banquet, which will begin at 7:00 p.m. (reception at 6:00 p.m.).

Former student-athletes who will be inducted include Dayven Johnston (track & field, football), John Simpson (wrestling), Eric Stellmon (track & field) and Rob Zimmerman (men's soccer).  Outstanding supporters to be inducted include Kim Harden, George Puls III and Dean Stoughton.  The 2009 CSM Athletics Hall of Fame inductees will also be recognized during a halftime ceremony at the game on October 10th.  Furthermore, the annual Golden Chamber of Commerce / Silver & Blue Homecoming Luncheon will be held on Friday, October 9th, at 11:30 a.m. on the CSM campus (Green Center).  Comedian Sam Adams, who is also a former sports columnist for the Rocky Mountain News, will be the guest speaker at the Homecoming Luncheon.
