Baseball Opens RMAC Schedule Against Regis This Weekend

GOLDEN – The Colorado School of Mines baseball team will open up its 2013 RMAC slate on Saturday and Sunday with a pair of doubleheaders against Regis University at Jim Darden Field in Golden. 

The pair of twin bills will begin each day at 12 p.m. with the opener, and the second game will start at approximately at 3 p.m.   

The Orediggers improved to 3-4 with a 2-1 record against Adams State at Runyon Field Sports Complex in Pueblo last weekend in a nonconference tripleheader. Mines won the first game 8-1, lost the second 5-4 and captured the series with an 8-3 win in game three. 

Sophomores Matt Brown and Ben Gilman both went 1-0 on the mound for Mines after neither player allowed an earned run over 10.1 combined innings. Brown struck out eight and allowed just one hit in 6.0 innings in the game one win. Gilman moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just three hits over 4.1 innings with five strikeouts in game three. 

Charlie Basil and Bobby Egeberg led the offense with .444 and .500 batting averages, respectively, while Basil also led the team with an .889 slugging percentage and six of the team's 16 RBI during the weekend. 

Mines hit .457 as a squad while the pitching staff limited the Grizzlies to a .266 batting average.

The Orediggers currently lead the conference with a 4.32 ERA on the season while also leading the league in fewest walks allowed (19). 

Regis (5-1, 0-0 RMAC) currently boasts the best record in the conference with its 5-1 mark.  Junior Willy Gustin is batting .500 on the season and has been named the RMAC Baseball Player of the Week already this season.  Junior John Tosches leads the team and the RMAC with a .625 batting average over five games. 

Senior Aaron Harms leads the Rangers pitching staff and was named Preseason All-RMAC before the start of the season.  He leads the conference with 18 strikeouts.
