CSM baseball splits twinbill with Midland Lutheran

GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines (NCAA Division II) split a non-conference collegiate baseball doubleheader with Midland Lutheran College (NAIA) on Saturday afternoon, February 6th, at Darden Field.  Mines rallied for a 6-5 victory in game one while MLC won by the score of 8-3 in the nightcap.

Midland Lutheran had a three-run first inning in the opener and led for the entire contest until the Orediggers rallied for four runs in the final inning to win what was the season opener for both clubs.  Trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Mines got a two-run HR (1) from Craig Matsuda with no outs to pull to within a run of the Warriors.  A one-out double by Bobby Egeberg, an infield single by Nick Wong and an intentional walk to Anthony Siderius set the table for Elliott Riege, who plating the tying and go-ahead runs with a line-drive single to left field.  Matsuda, Wong (SB) and Siderius had two hits apiece for CSM while Chris Pickett (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K; now 1-0) picked up the win in relief of Marshall Schuler (5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 9 K; no decision).  Nolan Koehn went 4-for-4 with a HR (1) for the Warriors.  Matt Trejo (6.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K; now 0-1) suffered the loss for Midland Lutheran.  For the box score, CLICK HERE.

In game two, MLC starter Justin Robbins (7.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K; now 1-0) tossed a complete game as the Warriors improved to 1-1 overall.  D.J. Johnson (grand slam; 1) and McCoy Worthington (1) both homered for Midland Lutheran while Dustin Brown went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Wong went 2-for-3 with a double for Mines.  CSM starter Cory Ast (6.0 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 7 K) fell to 0-1.  For the box score, CLICK HERE.
