CSM baseball splits twinbill at Regis

DENVER, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines and Regis University split a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday, March 6th, at the Regis Baseball Field. CSM posted a 7-5 victory in game one before the Rangers won by the count of 6-4 in the nightcap.
Trailing 1-0 after three innings of play in the opener, CSM got an RBI double from Bobby Egeberg and a two-run single from Matt Spirek during a four-run fourth inning. Regis scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, but Jordan Williams' RBI single in the top of the seventh gave CSM a two-run cushion. The Rangers plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 5-5, however, Tyler Phan Thornton's first career HR in the top of the eighth put CSM up for good. John Wilson's RBI single in the top of the ninth, which scored Matthew Pullos all the way from first base, provided the final margin of victory. Thornton and Anthony Siderius both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while reliever Ben Smiley (1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K; now 1-0) got the victory in his first appearance of the 2010 campaign. Blake Dunham got his first career save while tossing a scoreless ninth inning. Alex Haag went 3-for-4 with a triple for the Rangers, who committed six errors and allowed four unearned runs. RU reliever Mike McElreath (1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K; now 0-2) suffered the loss. GAME ONE BOX SCORE.
In the series finale, Siderius' RBI groundout in the top of the third inning gave Mines a temporary 1-0 lead, but Regis (5-7 overall, 4-2 RMAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. The Rangers' Patrick Farrell hit his second HR (4) of the day while Jesus Arzaga went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Gerard Mohrmann (6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 BB, 5 K; now 2-1) earned the victory and Bryant Asnicar got the save (2). Thornton went 2-for-3 for CSM and Nick Piehl drove in two. Spirek (0-for-1, three BB) scored a pair of runs as starter Cris Rogers (4.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K) fell to 0-1. GAME TWO BOX SCORE.
Mines (5-5 overall, 2-4 RMAC) is scheduled to play at three-game series at CSU-Pueblo on Friday and Saturday, March 12th and 13th, at Rawlings Field in Pueblo, Colo.
