Former football coach and Director of Athletics Marv Kay to be inducted into RMAC Hall of Fame


GOLDEN, Colo. - Former Colorado School of Mines football coach and Director of Athletics Marv Kay will be inducted into the 2010 class of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Hall of Fame during a banquet on Saturday evening, June 26th, at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel.

The social hour begins at 5:00 p.m., followed by the dinner and 6:00 p.m. and the banquet at 7:00 p.m.

Kay, who will be enshrined along with five other individuals and two teams into the 2010 class of the RMAC Hall of Fame, was inducted into the CSM Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall of 2008.  Kay received an unprecedented "Trailblazer Award" upon his induction into the CSM Athletics Hall of Fame in honor of his incomparable service, dedication and vision in the CSM Department of Athletics.  Kay, who most notably served CSM in the capacities of Head Football Coach (1969-94) and Director of Athletics (1995-04), was also the Mayor of Golden from 1988-95.  Kay graduated from Mines in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in Engineering.

Kay, who earned three letters (1958-60) as an offensive and defensive lineman on the Oredigger football team, was selected as CSM's Outstanding Sophomore Athlete and Outstanding Junior Athlete during his collegiate career.  A Small College All-America selection following his senior season, Kay went on to sign a free agent contract with the NFL's Denver Broncos.  The President of his junior and senior classes at Mines, Kay was also named Mr. Engineer at E-Days.  Kay was a three-time letterwinner (1958-60) in the heavyweight division on the CSM wrestling squad, as well.  From 1964-66, Kay was a 1st Lieutenant for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

During his 26 years guiding the CSM football program, Kay coached 13 All-Americans and 50 All-RMAC players.  Selected as the RMAC Football Coach of the Year and AFCA District Coach of the Year in 1975 and 1979, Kay was also named the NAIA District Coach of the Year in 1975.  Kay, who went on to record the most coaching victories (84) in the history of the CSM football program, was presented with the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Merit Award and the Colorado Chapter of the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame Joe Kearney Award in 2004.  During his career at Mines, Kay also served in the capacity of Assistant Football Coach (1966-68), Head Swimming Coach (1966-68) and Assistant Director of Athletics (1980-94).  In 1968, Kay served on the Founding Board of Directors for the Eastern Rockies Rugby Union, and in 1999, was inducted into that organization's Hall of Fame.

An Honorary Member of CSM Blue Key, as well as an Honorary Colonel in the 115th Engineer Regiment, Kay served on the CSM Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1982-84.  Kay, who received the Mines Medal in 2005, was presented with the CSM Outstanding Alumnus Award in 2002 and the Golden Kiwanis / Mines Blue Key Community Service Award in 1989.  Furthermore, the namesake of CSM's Marvin the Miner mascot, which was unveiled in February of 2004, was fashioned as a tribute to Kay.

A longstanding member of the Golden Civic Foundation's Board of Directors, Kay served as President of that group in 1987 and 2003.  Also the President of the Golden Chamber of Commerce in 1983, Kay was presented with that organization's Outstanding Citizen Award (1988, 1993) and Award of Honor (1976).  Kay, who was a member of the Golden City Council from 1986-98, has also served as the Chairman of the Golden Buffalo Bill Days Celebration and as the Chairman of the Golden Oktoberfest Celebration Committee.  In 2007, Kay was the recipient of the Golden Rotary Club's Service Above Self Award and the Golden Landmarks Association's Living Landmark Award.

Kay, who was named Distinguished Faculty Lecturer by the Colorado Faculty Senate in 2005, resides in Golden with his wife, Diane.
