Colorado School of Mines' intercollegiate athletics program provides student-athletes with the opportunity to participate in 18 varsity sports, more than any other state institution in Colorado. Men's sports offered at Colorado School of Mines include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming & diving, track & field and wrestling. Women's sports include basketball, cross-country, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field and volleyball.
2009-10 CSM Athletics Highlights
• CSM finished third in the 2009-10 RMAC / Wells Fargo All-Sports Competition Cup.
• Final 2009-10 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings to be announced on June 23.
• The CSM women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament Quarterfinals (Elite Eight) in 2009, marking the farthest any team at Mines has ever advanced in NCAA Tournament play. The Orediggers were ranked #7 in the nation in the final 2009 NSCAA national poll. Kayla Mitchell garnered RMAC Player of the Year, First Team All-American and RMAC Academic Player of the Year recognition.
• The CSM football team had four players earn All-American honors in 2009.
• Head Coach Frank Kohlenstein was named RMAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year for the fifth time during his tenure at CSM. The CSM men advanced into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in program history.
• The CSM men’s cross country team finished third at the 2009 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Women’s runner Sydney Laws earned All-American recognition with her 10th-place showing. The CSM men were led by Aaron Swift and Ben Zywicki, both of whom brought home All-American honors. Twelve runners on the CSM cross country squads earned Academic All-RMAC honors in 2009, including Marie Patton, who was selected as the RMAC Women’s Academic Runner of the Year.
• The CSM volleyball program established new single-season program records for overall victories (22) and conference victories (13) in 2009. Mines’ berth as the #8 seed in the 2009 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament marked the second-ever NCAA post-season appearance for the CSM volleyball program.
• The CSM men's and women’s basketball teams made their first-ever appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2009-10. The Oredigger men were RMAC East Division Regular-Season Co-Champions.
• Wrestling finished ninth as a team in the 2009-10 NWCA Academic Top 15. Jacob Guynes, Jordan Larsen and Bradley Price earned All-Academic recognition from the NWCA, as well.
• All five CSM student-athletes who competed at the 2010 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships earned All-American recognition, including Jesse Dennis, Angel Forsling, Sarah Moore, Kevin Shaw and Andrew Zerwick. Moore was named RMAC Women’s Diver of the Year.
• Swift (men's indoor track & field), Patton (women's indoor track & field) and Forsling (women's swimming & diving) received Elite 88 Awards from the NCAA.
• A grand total of nine CSM student-athletes earned All-American recognition at the 2010 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, including Patton, Zywicki, Kiera Benson, Hilary Hurst, Mack McLain, Kristen Rinedollar, Briana Suppes, Russell Drummond and Ryan Hanley.
• McLain (1,500m) and Mark Husted (800m) both won individual national titles at the 2010 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Husted, McLain and Patton earned All-American honors for the Orediggers.
• Husted and Patton garnered RMAC Male and Female Outdoor Track & Field Academic Athlete of the Year honors.
• Softball's Kaleigh Starr was a First Team All-RMAC selection. Head Coach Annie Van Wetzinga recorded her 100th career victory.
• Baseball’s Cris Rogers and Andrew Ryan garnered First Team Academic All-RMAC honors. Anthony Siderius earned First Team All-RMAC accolades.
• The CSM golf team qualified as the #6 seed in the Central Region for the 2010 NCAA Division II West Central Regional. Jim Knous, who registered a team-best 75.05 stroke average in 2009-10, was named First Team All-RMAC. Cory Bacon garnered First Team Academic All-RMAC honors.
