Wilson Earns Mines Student-Athlete Of The Week Honor

GOLDEN - After posting a perfect 5-0 record for the Colorado School of Mines wrestling team last week, including a 4-0 record at the Grand Canyon Duals on Saturday, freshman 197-pounder Paul Wilson has been named this week’s Mines Student-Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Wilson, a Stillwater, Okla., native, improved his current winning streak to nine matches with his unblemished mark last week and the true freshman has not lost since falling in the third-place bout of the season-opening Wyoming Cowboy Open on November 3, which currently puts his record at 15-2 on the season.

He opened the week with a first-period pinfall over David Bill of Cal Baptist at the 2:12 mark in Mines’ 23-23 second-tiebreaker loss to Cal Baptist on Thursday, before starting off his 4-0 day at the Grand Canyon Duals on Saturday with a second-period pin over Sanjay Rekhi of Simon Fraser in Mines’ 34-8 victory.

He added a 7-0 decision over Lucas Moderow of MSU-Moorhead, a first-period pin over Eric Fan of No. 6 Grand Canyon and a first-period pin over Chris Brassell of No. 4 St. Cloud State during the tournament as well.

Four of Wilson’s five victories during the week came via pinfall, including three falls during the first period of action.
