Helbig Named The Mines Student-Athlete Of The Week

GOLDEN – In leading the Colorado School of Mines women’s basketball team to a 1-1 record over the weekend, including a career-high performance in Saturday's loss to Fort Lewis, sophomore guard Taylor Helbig has been named this week’s Mines Student-Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Helbig led Mines to a weekend road split at Adams State (W, 58-46) and Fort Lewis (L, 80-73) with 21.0 points per game and team-highs in field goals (14) and 3-point field goals (seven). She finished 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from distance, 7-of-7 at the free throw stripe and collected 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per contest.

Against the Skyhawks, Helbig recorded new collegiate bests with game-highs of 28 points and five three-pointers, going 9-of-20 from the floor, 5-of-7 on threes and 5-of-5 on free throws.

The Thornton native and Petroleum Engineering major tied for the team lead with 14 points in Mines’ 58-46 win over Adams State on Friday while adding six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Saturday's effort was her 12th double-digit performance in the last 13 games and her fifth game of the season with 20 or more points.
